The ABCO company begins with one truck

It all started with one truck

1967

The EDCO is formed

Burrtec’s sister company EDCO is formed on March 27, 1967

1978

Burrtec is formed

Burrtec was officially incorporated on July 8, 1978

1989

Recycling Rolls Out Statewide

The adoption of California's waste reduction and recycling law (AB 939) meant recycling was now the law. Recycling becomes part of residential waste pickup in California

1995

Automated barrel rollout begins

Residential customers switch over to automated barrel service for their properties

1995

Agua Mansa Material Recovery Facility Opens

Agua Mansa Material Recovery Facility opens in December 1995. In 2004, it was expanded to with a new MRF processing system, along with organics processing.

1996

Victor Valley Material Recovery Facility Opens

This location was proudly opened by Burrtec in 1996.

1997

West Valley Material Recovery Facilty Opens

This location in Fontana opens as a Material Recovery Facilty and Transfer Station.

1999

The current headquarters open in Fontana

2000

Cochella Valley transfer Station

This location was built and opened by Burrtec.

2001

Burrtec surpasses 500 employees

2004

Burrtec purchase their first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) truck

2005

Burrtec purchase their first Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) truck

2006

Burrtec starts waste hauling for the California desert communities

2006

Victor Valley Material Recovery Facility gets an upgrade

The system was upgraded with a retrofit over the conveyor belt system, adding cardboard, paper, glass screens, and two optical sorters

Edom Hill Transfer Station

Acquired by Burrtec in 2006

2008

Burrtec becomes the Operator at Salton City Landfill

This is a continued partnership with Imperial County

2010

Coachella Valley Compost

Acquired by Burrtec in 2010

2012

Burbank Recycle Center

Burrtec took over operations in 2012

East Valley Recycling & Transfer Opens

Burrtec acquired EVRT in 2012. It later opened as Material Recovery Facility and Transfer Station in 2014

2012

Assembly Bill 341 is introduced

California implements Assembly Bill 341, a mandatory commercial recycling law that requires all businesses that generate four cubic yards or more of commercial solid waste per week to participate in a recycling program

2014

West Valley MRF gets an Upgrade

Added Construction & Demolition, Compost area, and DODA

2015

Burt the recycling mascot makes his first appearance

2018

Burrtec surpasses 1,000 employees

2020

Assembly Bill 1826 is introduced

AB 1826 requires businesses to recycle their organic waste depending on the amount of waste they generate per week

2021

Founder Ed Burr passes away

2022

Senate Bill 1383 is widely implemented

In September 2016, Governor Edmund Brown Jr. set methane emissions reduction targets for California in a statewide effort to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants. With this, Senate Bill 1383 became law, requiring food waste recycling for residents and businesses

Burrtec begins hauling for the City of Santa Clarita

2023

Yucca Valley Transfer Station

The location in Yucca Valley opens as a Transfer Station as a resource in the High Desert

2024

Victorville Compressed Natural Gas Station opens to the public
